“Everything” locates files & folders by filename instantly. It initially displays every file & folder on your computer (hence the name "Everything"). You type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed.
WinDirStat sorts your directories in order by size and displays a "treemap" which is a graphic display of your hard dive representing directory sizes with blocks and colors. You can easily pinpoint what directories/files are taking up space on your hard drive.
The only way to absoltely protect your computer from maware is to unplug the power cord & never turn it on. If that's not an option you should seriously consider the paid version of Malwarebyes. It's not all you need, but it's a good start.
It's not just a program, it's a program that allows you to run hundres of programs, (protable apps) from a thumb drive. The programs are totally containged on a USB thump dirve and leave no trace on the computer.
What can I say about Dreamweaver? It's the Cadilac of web editors. Or, as Adobe puts it, it's the world's most complete toolset for web designers & front-end developers. It's expensive ($20/month) and if you need it, you know it. If you not sure, then you don't need it.
Notepad++ is a free (no adware) source code editor & Notepad replacement. It handles multi-documents, has multi-view, does multi-line & multi-column editing & much more. Code color-coding & automatic code indents make debuggin a snap.
Notepad, a free text editor uses no format tags or styles, making it perfect for system files, source code, html, as will as batch files. It uses negligible system resources; making it quick, especially on under-powered hardware. It has been in all versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 1.0.
vi (pronounced "vee-eye") is a screen editor available on most Unix systems. It is fast & powerful & can be used from any terminal because it does not depend on arrow & function keys—using standard alphabetic keys for commands. No, I don't use it anymore, just stuck it here to be cute.
Brackets is a lightweight, powerful, text editor. It blends visual tools into the editor so you get the right amount of help when you want it. It's still under development so it's not full featured yet. But it is definately ready for prime time and a definate must have.
Filezilla is a graphical FTP, SFTP, & FTPS file transfer client with drag & drop file transfers. It is free with no adware, limits, or nagware. At a minimum it's a quick & easy way to move files back & forth from/to a web server. And if you need more then that it is much, much, more.
A poor man's Photoshop. If you need more then a free photo editor offers & you can't afford Photoshop, but need the power & versitility, PaintShop Pro is your program. With a relatively easy interface, automated fixes, along with some very powerful tools, it can do it all.
This is what you need to prove to your cable company that you have a bad (intermettent) connection. All they test for is instentaneous speed. But mini-outages (2 seconds or more) that can play havoc with your streaming and downloading, causing lock ups and making you reboot your devices.
Just byte the bullet and install a paid anti-virus program. AND keep it updated. AND renew it every year. The Deluxe version protects 5 to 5 PC's, Macs, smartphones (Apple or Android), or tablets with a single subscription. It's not an option anymore, so just do it.
